There are few places in the world where you could go surfing and skiing on the same day! However, California has one of the most diverse environments in the world varying from hot deserts to subarctic conditions depending on latitude and elevation. For example, it includes both the highest and lowest points in mainland USA. Mount Whitney is 14,495 feet above sea level, but under 100 miles away is Death Valley which is 282 feet below sea level and the hottest, driest place in the nation. This diverse climate is also the reason why California is the only state to have hosted both the Summer and the Winter Olympics! In fact, the state will play host to the Summer Games again very soon - in 2028!
